Elaine McVey and Eric Hannan
The Agilist vs The Data Scientist
Elaine McVey is the Data Science Manager at TransLoc in Durham, NC, where she has led the data science team through implementing a simulation process that has become a key part of the company’s pilot strategy. A theme in her career has been improving the processes by which statistics and data science work is done. This has often involved borrowing from software development in a data science appropriate way. In past positions, this involved version control, development environments, and reproducible research. At TransLoc, she has been experimenting with the application of Agile practices to data science, and using them to break down the organizational barriers to maximizing data science impact. She recently presented her learnings in a talk “Agile Data Science” at the 2018 RStudio conference. When she’s not tackling data science challenges at work, you can find her chasing her sons, pit bulls, snakes, or pet rats — or escaping them all in the woods trail running or mountain biking.
Eric Hannan is the Agile Practices Lead at TransLoc, a recently acquired transit technology company in Durham, NC. He has been part of a leadership team carrying out an Agile transformation of the product engineering squads at TransLoc over the last 18 months. He advocates for Agile adoption across functions in the company as well as managing the Agile practice and Scrum Masters within Product. Eric has experience with Agile Transformations in small and large organizations and is passionate about creating an environment where great people can do great things. When he’s not evangelizing Agile, you will find Eric cruising through the twisty mountain roads on this motorcycle.
